The Indian pharmaceutical sector is large and has the potential of a global leader for low-priced high-quality drugs. The new patent regulations had a strong impact on the drug industry in India. There is a serious decline in the number of pharma patents recently after compulsory licensing for drugs was implemented in India. While regulations are meant for reducing the prices of essential drugs, there are investment-related issues when a patent is subjected to voluntary licensing. The present study focuses on three phases in pharmaceutical patenting identified by analysing the major patent databases and the potential shift in pharma patenting sector from acute to lifestyle disease-based drugs. The recent trend identified in the pharma patenting sector in India is quite unusual and unreported so far.Keywords

Patents are the protected form of innovations and the currency of a knowledge-based economy. This article is an outcome of the analysis of working of patents data, which were published on the Indian Patent Office (IPO) website during 2012 and 2013, and continuously updated thereafter. For an overview of working of patents in India, an aggregate of 64 companies and/or organizations were selected for this study. The results of the analysis revealed that Qualcomm topped the list with 1113 granted patents at IPO, followed by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (1085), Hindustan Unilever (773), Samsung Electronics (705), and Philips (352). The objective of this study was to determine the workability of patents in India, and the results indicated that all the seven patents granted to Indofil (an Indian company, which manufacturers agricultural, specialty and performance chemicals) were in working conditions, which apparently signified that the firm had effectively transferred the innovations for production and for the end-user. IPO was preferred as an important patent filling offices (PFO) by different national and international companies for filling their innovations. The results of this study provide an opportunity for the inventors, market players, researchers and consumers to know about the innovations which are lying in the PFOs of the different countries and lapsed after completing their life, i.e. 20 years.Keywords

Himalayan pencil cedar (Juniperus polycarpos) is an evergreen tree distributed from Afghanistan, Baluchistan, Kagan valley, Kashmir, Lahaul-Spiti to upper reaches of western Tibet1. Naturally, the lower and upper limit of a tree species over a specific region varies due to the ecological settings of the area. Recently it has been noted that due to global/ regional climatic changes there is marked change in distribution and composition of vegetation at its upper limit. Various studies from different parts of the globe indicate migration and shifting of treeline towards the higher altitudes2-15. Treeline migration/shifting have also been recorded from the Indian Himalaya by studying treeline dynamics over Uttarakhand- Himachal Pradesh16,17 and Sikkim18. Himalayan pencil cedar is known to grow generally at high altitudes with the highest treeline recorded from the forest of Juniperus tibetica at southeast Tibet (~4900 masl)19 and Juniperus sp. in Hunza-Karakorum (~3900 masl)20. Demarcation of the upper limit of treeline in complex mountainous terrains remains a challenging task.References
